NICE advises that repeat testing for suspected dysfunction may be considered if symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop, but not sooner than six weeks after the most recent test.<\/p><aside class=\"cbr-note\"><strong>More testing is not always better testing<\/strong>Repeating too quickly can capture normal biological movement before the thyroid system has had time to settle.<\/aside><p>People taking levothyroxine or antithyroid treatment may follow a monitoring plan set by their clinician. The interval changes as results stabilise.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"thyroid-context\">Medicines and supplements can affect the picture<\/h2>\n<p>Several medicines can influence thyroid function or the way results are interpreted. NICE specifically advises asking about biotin because high intakes from supplements can produce falsely high or low thyroid test results.<\/p><p>Pregnancy, pituitary disease, recent severe illness and previous thyroid treatment may also change which tests are needed. Testing is most useful when a clinician considers the combination, duration and other possible explanations.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"thyroid-next\">Use the result to agree what happens next<\/h2>\n<p>Ask whether the pattern suggests a thyroid problem, whether confirmation is needed and when another test would be informative.
